Continuous Improvement

Core Values – what we believe in

  • Develop coaches before developing players
  • Quality vs quantity
  • Bringing uniformity in style of play & coaching, at all levels of the various youth programs
  • Talent identification must be done in the context of the game
  • Youth players develop at different rates & their performance trajectory is non- linear
  • 75 years young Coach Shiv has been adapting & reinventing, with a motto to continuously learn, grow & excel. He has been the student of the game for more than six decades

What makes Coach Shiv – unique & different?

  • Coaching methods are principles based & supported by scientifically proven training methods
  • Game centered approach. Teaching game in the context of the game
  • Management by measurement. Goal setting
  • Player centered. Coach driven. Parent & community supported

An Effective Coach is the One - who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way!

What are 4D skills?

They are:
Coach Shiv's - Coaching Philosophy

  • Deception — hiding one’s intentions
  • Diverting the opponent’s attention
  • Deliberately delaying
  • Deception comprising body and stick feints to distract an opponent
How can we blend both – 3D skills and 4D skills — with optimum balance at the right moment?

There are unlimited game situations in which this can be done with a clear understanding of what’s a skill’s key role in a given game situation, and where it can be applied or not with ease and grace.

The major differences are in the philosophy, strategy and tactics where 3D and 4D skills are applied. 3D skills are implemented when on the run to dodge at speed. Whereas 4D skills are and should be applied when one deliberately slows down to distract and outwit the opponent(s) specifically during the process of tactical creative moves. In other words, they will have a higher degree of impact in midfield play while launching an attack or fine tuning it during the buildup stage.

Shiv’s coaching style focuses on all aspects of the game from the development of basic skills to the development of the player’s total understanding of the game. Not only did Shiv help our team – Qualify for the 2002 Perth WC – as a whole, he has also, over the years, provided me with individual attention to develop my personal play.

Meeting early in the mornings before going to work, Shiv would take time out of his busy schedule to meet a small group of hockey players to work on technical and tactical skills. Technically I was able to focus on improving tackling and hitting, while tactically utilizing the group setting I was able to work on making quick decisions under pressure. The practices were very precise and goal oriented. Shiv provided limitless feedback that was structured, yet progressive.

For example, Shiv is able to remedy technique like footwork and grip, while continually giving feedback that builds on itself at a pace that pushes your game to new levels. Shiv has such a complete understanding of the game he can coach any level from kids who are stepping onto a pitch for the first time to World class players.

Beijing Olympic games.

Shiv occasionally worked with our National team athletes as well. His ability to provide a different and new concept to our highest level players was extremely well received. The players looked forward to Shiv’s training’s, and were able to learn more with each individual session. Shiv enjoyed demonstrating many skills, so for those athletes who were more visual, his coaching style was a bonus.

Between 1984 and 1990, the nucleus of the Canada’s two Olympic, two world cups, and two Gold Medal Pan American Teams were developed under Shiv’s tutelage. He is able to break the total game down into its fundamental skills. Whether it be shooting on goal or making a tackle at the edge of the circle. Shiv has the ability to make the game simple. I have enjoyed Shiv’s coaching.
